Appeal Filed to Prevent Instant Runoff Voting in Minneapolis

The Minnesota Voters Alliance just filed their notice to appeal the dismissal of their lawsuit against the City of Minneapolis and FairVote Minnesota.  The Minnesota Voters Alliance sued to prevent the City of Minneapolis from implementing Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) for the city’s 2009 municipal elections, arguing that IRV was both unconstitutional and a violation of Minnesota election laws.

On January 14, District Court Judge George McGunnigle dismissed the lawsuit ruling that Instant Runoff Voting is legal for the city to implement for municipal elections.

Minneapolis Precinct Caucuses on Tuesday, March 3, 2009

We’re certainly getting down to the wire with municipal election party caucuses only 5 weeks away and the Mayor and City Council on the ballot. It would be nice to have some clarity as to how these folks will be elected by the time the parties endorse candidates this spring.

My personal – somewhat biased – perspective is that this appeal isn’t likely to have much success. Then again, anything can happen in the appellate arguments. What do you think?
