Yesterday the BBC reported that a crazy new trend is developing amongst people who think they are a lot smarter than science. Apparently this hot new craze is to hold “swine flu parties” whereby you and all your friends can infect each other with the H1N1 virus! Yippee!
The “logic” goes as follows: (1) H1N1 is continuing to spread, (2) right now death rates from H1N1 are relatively low, (3) those who have had H1N1 can develop immunity to it in the future, (4) it could mutate in the future to become more deadly; therefore, (5) let’s all deliberately contract swine flu now, so we don’t have to die from it in the future! We’re so smart!
Unfortunately, public health officials don’t quite agree with this line of thinking. For one, deliberate contraction of the virus continues its spread. Second, YOU CAN STILL DIE FROM IT!
